What AEO is

If you already know what a featured snippetFeatured snippetA featured snippet is the short answer Google lifts from a page and shows in a box at the top of the results. is, you already understand the shape of this. AEO is that same objective, applied to answers that are written rather than quoted, across several products instead of one.
AEO, SEO and GEO, told apart
Three words, three different prizes. People use them loosely and the distinctions are real.
| Term | The prize | How you know you won |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | A high place in a list of links | Your position, and the clicks it brings |
| AEO | Being the source an answer is built from | Your page is cited under the answer |
| GEO | Your business named inside the answer | How often the name appears when buyers ask |
The useful way to hold it: AEO is about your page being used. GEOGEOGEO, or generative engine optimization, is the work of making it more likely that AI search names your business when someone asks it a question about what you sell. is about your business being named. They often happen together and they are not the same event, which matters the moment you decide what to count.
How an answer engine picks its sources
It searches, opens a small handful of pages, and writes an answer out of the passages it found most usable. Often around five pages. Every other page on the subject is not consulted.
The technical name for this is RAGRAGRAG, or retrieval-augmented generation, is the standard way AI search answers a question about the live web: search first, read the results, then write the answer using them., and it is worth knowing one thing about it: the fetch happens live, at the moment somebody asks. That is called retrievalRetrievalRetrieval is the step where AI search fetches live web pages in the middle of answering you, instead of relying only on what it already knows., and it is why publishing a clear page can change an answer within days.
What the engine is looking for inside those pages is a passage it can lift. Not a whole page. A passage. Anchoring the answer to real fetched text is called groundingGroundingGrounding is tying an answer to real fetched sources rather than letting the model answer from memory., and it is why a page that states something plainly beats a better page that circles it.
What a liftable page looks like
A page wins answers when the answer is findable in it without reading the whole thing. Five properties do almost all of the work.
- The answer is in the first paragraph. Before any persuasion, background or history. A page that warms up for four hundred words has nothing to lift.
- One page answers one question. A page covering ten things is a weaker match for each of them than ten pages would be.
- The heading is the question. Phrased the way a person would say it out loud, not the way your industry writes it internally.
- Claims carry checkable facts. A number, a date, a named source. Specifics get quoted because they can be verified; adjectives cannot.
- Sentences stand on their own. A sentence that needs the previous paragraph to make sense cannot be quoted in isolation, which is the only way it will ever be quoted.
A good test: take any single paragraph out of your page, show it to somebody with no context, and ask what question it answers. If they cannot say, an engine cannot either.
The questions themselves are not a guessing game. People Also AskPeople Also AskPeople Also Ask is the expandable list of related questions Google shows inside its results. on any Google results page is a free list of the exact wording real people use.
Does structured data help? The field disagrees
Structured dataStructured dataStructured data is information written into a page in a fixed format that states plainly what the page is: that this is a product, that this is its price, that this is the business selling it. is machine-readable facts placed in a page’s code, usually written in JSON-LDJSON-LDJSON-LD is the format structured data is usually written in: a block of machine-readable facts placed in the page's code. using the shared vocabulary at Schema.orgSchema.orgSchema.org is the shared vocabulary that structured data uses, defining what counts as a product, an organisation, an article and so on.. Whether it helps you get cited is the most contested question in this subject, so here are both positions.
- The case for: it removes guesswork. A machine choosing between sources should favour the one that states plainly what it is. It is also cheap, standard, and helps ordinary search regardless.
- The case against: the largest test found nothing. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added structured data between August 2025 and March 2026 against 4,000 comparable pages that did not. Citations moved down 4.6% in AI Overviews and up about 2% in AI Mode and ChatGPT, which is inside the noise.
One study with a control groupControl groupA control group is a comparable set you leave alone, so you can tell whether a change caused a result or everything moved anyway. is much better evidence than a thousand blog posts without one, and it is still one study. Our read: add structured data because it is cheap and it helps search, and stop treating it as the lever for AI visibility. If somebody sells it as that lever, ask them what they measured it against.
How to measure AEO without fooling yourself
Ask the questions your buyers ask, several times each, and count how often your page is used and your business is named.
Several times is the part everybody skips. Answer engines do not repeat themselves exactly, and that spread is called varianceVarianceVariance is how much a result moves around when you repeat the same test.. Asking once and writing down the result produces a number that looks like a fact and is a coin flip. Asking repeatedly is called samplingSamplingSampling means asking the same question several times instead of once, because AI search does not give an identical answer every time., and it is the difference between a measurement and an anecdote.
Two things are worth counting separately. A citationCitationA citation is a link or source name AI search shows next to its answer to indicate where a piece of information came from. means your page was read. Your mention rateMention rateMention rate is the share of answers that named your business, out of all the times a question was asked. means your business was named. Being cited without being named happens constantly, and it converts nobody.
Watch zero-clickZero-click searchA zero-click search is one where the person gets what they needed without visiting any website. behaviour too. If impressions hold while clicks fall, you are winning the answer and losing the visit, which is a success in AEO terms and needs a different measure of value than traffic.
Is AEO a real discipline, or rebranded SEO?
Genuinely arguable, and you will meet both camps, often angrily.
- It is just good SEO with a new name. Every practice on the list above was already best practice: answer early, write clearly, be readable, be specific. Nothing here requires a new budget line or a new vendor.
- It is a different job because the scoreboard changed. Position no longer describes the outcome. You can rank first and be absent from the answer above your own listing, and no traditional measure will tell you that happened.
Both are right about something, and they are arguing about different halves. The work is largely the same work. The measurement is genuinely new, because nothing in Search Console tells you whether AI search named you. That gap is the only part we would spend money on.
