Structured data

Structured data is information written into a page in a fixed format that states plainly what the page is: that this is a product, that this is its price, that this is the business selling it.

In a little more detail

Visitors never see it. It sits in the page's code for machines to read first. Its value is that it removes guesswork, and a machine deciding which businesses to name will favor the one it does not have to guess about.

Related terms

  • Entity: An entity is a specific thing in the world that a machine has decided it knows about: a company, a person, a place.
  • Rendering: Rendering is the step where a browser runs a page's code to build what you finally see on screen.
